The longest-running is The Mousetrap, which debuted in 1952 and has seen almost 30,000 performances to date.

Can you bring snacks into London theatres?

Can you take a bottle of water to the theatre in London?

Each London theatre has its own rules on bottles of water. Generally, you should only consume food and drink bought on-site. However, some allow water in plastic bottles or ask you to distil drinks into plastic containers. Empty reusable water bottles may be permitted in some venues, but glass is not allowed.

Can I bring a backpack to the theatre?

Regulations for backpacks in London theatres vary, but as a rule of thumb, your bag should be able to fit underneath the seat in front of you. This is usually 30 x 30 x 15cm. Your bags may be inspected and you may be asked to leave it in a locker if these are available.

Can I wear jeans to the theatre in London?

There are generally no dress codes for theatres in London. While you should be dressed appropriately and comfortably, you can wear jeans freely. If you’re not sure, it may be best to read the small print for individual shows. As a rule, anything that is not outrageous, dangerous or offensive should be permitted.

Phantom of the Opera

Regarded by many as the best music theatre London has to offer, the Phantom of the Opera is an enduring classic. Composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber, this Tony award-winning musical tells the love story of a masked musical prodigy and a young soprano.

It is known not only for its big hits such as ‘The Music of the Night’ and ‘All I Ask of You’, but for its stage production. The iconic chandelier descent in particular is a fan favourite.

You can see The Phantom of the Opera live at His Majesty’s Theatre, near to the National Gallery and our Charing Cross branch. Prepare for an evening of earth-shattering vocals, awe-inspiring visuals and heart-wrenching drama with one of the best West End shows in the city.

The Lion King

The Lyceum Theatre proudly calls itself the home of The Lion King, and for good reason. Based on the 1994 Disney animated film, The Lion King is considered one of the best musicals in the West End. You’ll find all the drama in the stage version, which has run since 1999.

The show is ideal for families thanks to its vibrant costumes and colours, honouring Africa’s scenery and culture. While there will be all the top tracks including ‘Can You Feel the Love Tonight’ and ‘Hakuna Matata’, you can also expect new musical numbers like ‘The Madness of King Scar’.

Having grossed more than £4 billion in London and $1.9 billion on Broadway, it’s one of the capital’s most recommended West End Shows. The Lyceum Theatre is located in Covent Garden – ideal for having a drink in our Charing Cross branch bar before a night on the town.

Witness for the Prosecution

British detective novel powerhouse Agatha Christie sees her courtroom masterpiece come alive in one of London’s best theatre plays. Based at County Hall, close to the best London landmarks including the Houses of Parliament, it’s as interactive as it is engaging.

That’s because Witness for the Prosecution is one of few London theatre shows where you can determine how it ends. Much like other unpredictable productions like The Play That Goes Wrong, this one has plenty of twists and turns. You get the chance to play the jury and decide the fate of defendant Leonard Vole, accused of murder.

You’ll find County Hall on Belvedere Road, close to Waterloo station. Pick a jury seat and be a part of this Agatha Christie classic.

Hamilton

This relatively new production has been dominating London’s West End ever since it broke onto the scene in 2017. Today, hot off the success of its Broadway playhouse shows, it’s highly regarded as a must see theatre London show. The American version was a hit from the off, beating others for theatre ticket sales including The Book of Mormon and An American in Paris.

The musical tells the story of one of America’s founding fathers, Alexander Hamilton. It does so with a contemporary twist of hip-hop, R&B and jazz records, making it one of the most upbeat plays since MJ The Musical.

To date, Hamilton has won 11 Tony and seven Olivier awards, putting its modern stamp on the London theatre scene. It takes place at the Victoria Palace Theatre, famous for other productions including The Rocky Horror Show.
